Okay, if we are talking about solving systems of equations and you have two variables, here's how. ex. 2x+y=9, 3x-y=1now solve for x

OpenStudy (anonymous):

First line up the equations like so... 2x+y=9 3x-y=1 It helps to visualize... Now, all you have to do is add. litterally just add straight down so 2x and 3x would become 5x and the Y's would cancel and the 9 and 1 would be 10 Now you new equation would look like 5x=10 Now, simply divide 5 to 10 to get X by itself and x=2

Now here are some pro tips, only use this method on systems of equations that have the same coefficient (the number in front of the variable) and if the like-variables (ex. X and X or Y and Y) can be easily manipulated to cancel each other out when added. And oh make sure the variables have the oppisite sign like negative Y and positive Y so they would actaully cancel each other out upon adding. If not but they do have the same coefficient then just muitiply everything in that equation by negative 1 to make that variable into an oppisite integer. best of luck my friend
