What is the entropy change associated with the chemical reaction that occurs when iron oxide is converted to its metal form? Fe2O3(s) + 3CO(g) ? 2Fe(s) + 3CO2(g) A. Positive B. Zero C. Cannot be determined D. Negative

OpenStudy (vera_ewing):

@aaronq do you know the answer to this one?

OpenStudy (vera_ewing):

I'm pretty sure it's D right?

OpenStudy (aaronq):

To assess the change of entropy you look at the number of gas molecules in the products and the reactants - if more gas molecules are produced then entropy is positive. Here it's zero

OpenStudy (vera_ewing):

ok thanks!

OpenStudy (aaronq):

no problem

OpenStudy (vera_ewing):

wait no its positive @aaronq

OpenStudy (aaronq):

there are 3 gas molecules on both sides, so there is no net gain
