Does the equation represent a direct variation? If so, find the constant of variation. 5x = -3y

OpenStudy (tkhunny):

Can it be written in the form y = kx? Same question.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I think so?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

actually I don't know

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I think not

OpenStudy (tkhunny):

Divide both sides by -3. What do you get?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-1.66

OpenStudy (tkhunny):

That makes no sense. Where did x, y, and "=" go? 5x = -3y Divide by -3 \(\dfrac{5}{-3}x = y\) Now, I ask again, can it be written in the form y = kx, maybe with k = -5/3?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeah that's right

OpenStudy (tkhunny):

Well, there you go.
