35 Which statements are correct for all three halogens, chlorine, bromine and iodine? 1 They all form hydrides that are strong acids in aqueous solution. 2 They all react with aqueous sodium hydroxide to form oxo-anions. 3 They all require one more electron to fill the p orbitals of their outer shells. Ans : 1,2,3 Please explain :)
they are all true
Cl 1s2 2s2 2p6 3s2 3p5 Br:1s2 2s2 2p6 3s2 3p6 4s2 3d10 4p5 I: 1s2 2s2 2p6 3s2 3p6 4s2 3d10 4p6 5s2 4d10 5p5 Statement 3 is correct it shows that all halogens require one electron to fill the p orbitals. H+1/2Cl2-->HCL H+1/2F2-->HF H+1/2I2-->HI All are strong acids, all of the listed hydrides can donate a H+ ion to a base. The reaction of chlorine with cold sodium hydroxide solution Definition: An oxyanion is an anion containing oxygen. The reaction between chlorine and cold dilute sodium hydroxide solution 2NaOH+Cl2-->NaCl+NaClO+H2O
i don't think statement 1 is correct because hydrides are compounds that hydrogen bind to a electropositive element but halogens are not electropositive. is there any hydride of halogens? am i right @chmvijay ?
what do you think @Abhisar ?
HCl, do you know about this compound ? Hydrogen binds with an electronegative element. All are true !
when you mention hydride that means hydrogen link to electropositive element not halogens. in hydrides electron density is dense around hydrogen but in HCl hydrogen hasn't dense electron density.
do you agree with me @Abhisar ?
Hydrides are referred to any element bonded to Hydrogen in the periodic table (exception noble gases)
HCl is a kind of Covalent Hydride
Yes i agree @Abmon98 `The term hydride is commonly named after binary compounds that hydrogen forms with other elements of the periodic table. Hydride compounds in general form with almost any element, except a few noble gases.`
but what i said is in wikipedia.com i don't know maybe you are right.
Don't take wikipedia for granted ! It is not a reliable source, anyone can edit it.
is this definition is on a website? give me an address ?
can you give a valid source?
i appreciate if you introduce me an reliable source.
The above link is for Britannica Encyclopedia. You can rely on it !
