Cross-cultural research into temperament has uncovered some differences between infants. Freedman (1974) reported a series of studies that tested babies' temperament by putting a cloth over their eyes and nose while they were lying quietly to see how they reacted. Chinese-American, Japanese-American, and Navajo babies were more likely to remain quiet and still, breathing through their mouth, than either Caucasian-American or African-American children.
