Medals! :) How does an enzyme inhibitor work?
Well lets get the obvious out of the way: What is an inhibitor? :)
Its a substance that decreases the rate of or stops a chemical reaction completely.
Example. So we work with 2-3 types of inhibitors which are different in inhibitor mechanism and effect. Common for them all is that they bind to the enzyme and then inhibits the enzyme. Where they bind depends on the type. If you want to know about the different types let me know.
nhibitors work by preventing reactants from coming together. Usually, they combine with one of the reactants either permanently or temporarily.
But, what exactly is it used for? its not part of the question, I'm just curious.
Well, for metabolism it can work as regulation.
For example the glycolysis is constantly regulated by intermediate from the oxidation of glucose.
That serve as enzyme inhibitors.
So, Enzyme inhibitors are substances that bind to an enzyme and change its shape or block its ability to interact with the chemical reaction, right?
I think I get it. Thank you!
