While in Europe, if you drive 119km per day, how much money would you spend on gas in one week if gas costs 1.10 euros per liter and your car's gas mileage is 40.0mi/gal ? Assume that 1euro=1.26dollars.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

(40.0 mi/gal) x (1.60934 km/mi) / (3.78541 L/gal) = 17.005 km/L (7 days) x (119 km/day) / (17.005 km/L) x (1.10 euro/L) x ($1.36/euro) = $73.28

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i try to put that as the answer but they said in wrong

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Maybe the cost is wanted in euros. The problem didn't actually say about that.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes it is wanted in euro

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Then: (7 days) x (119 km/day) / (17.005 km/L) x (1.10 euro/L) = 53.88 euros

OpenStudy (anonymous):

how can i round that to dollar and having the correct significant figure

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I converted to dollars the first time. If they're going to be fussy about significant digits, then $73.3, which looks stupid.

OpenStudy (triciaal):

when dealing with dollars I think it's standard to use 2 decimal places.

OpenStudy (triciaal):

you are in Europe. the money in Europe is euro. they gave you the conversion factor so you can convert your$ to euros. you must be expected to pay in euros! @Tech1please stop long enough to read the question properly and explain what you are doing so it's easy to follow and the person asking will "see" what steps to take. @fatima236 how you realize you can't just accept answers even if some work is shown. If you don't understand what the "helper" is doing make sure you let the person know.

OpenStudy (triciaal):

for this problem let one week = 7 days, you need to know the conversion factor for km with miles and also gallons with liters you were given euros with dollars.

OpenStudy (triciaal):

typo above not how you know correction now you know

OpenStudy (anonymous):

triciaal: There comes a point at which the asker must put forth some effort. I contend that point comes after a complete solution with every step is shown. Then some real learning is accomplished by the reader looking to see what each step does -- which happens if s/he cares about the process and isn't just looking for an answer to a homework assignment. Of course it's standard to show dollars to two decimal points. That's why I did it that way the first time -- and why I am annoyed at being told I'm wrong.

OpenStudy (triciaal):

@fatima236 do you have the conversion factors? you need to find the rate for km/liter

OpenStudy (triciaal):

@Tech1 don't take this the wrong way. we are here to help each other. you did not explain what you were doing! neither of you realized that if you are in Europe you pay in euros they gave you the conversion rate. if you stopped long enough to read carefully you would see that the second time instead of guessing at something else namely it's stupid to have $73.3. Yes the person asking should interact. we are not here to just give answers. If you notice I said to the poster "If you don't understand what the "helper" is doing make sure you let the person know." Now, will you please redo the problem to guide @fatima236 to the solution.

OpenStudy (triciaal):

@fatima236 I can not help you if you will not interact and answer questions when asked. The computer says you are viewing. So?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

sorry Triciaal i was in bed at that time

OpenStudy (anonymous):

tech1 thank you so much for ur help it really help me out
