When Godfrey Hardy and Wilhelm Weinberg described the factors that affect genetic equilibrium, they first had to define what it meant for a population to be in genetic equilibrium. In order to imagine a state of genetic equilibrium, what assumption did they have to make? Mating must occur randomly. Mutations must be only beneficial. Genetic drift must occur at a steady rate. Populations must not be geographically isolated.
