whitemonsterbunny17 (whitemonsterbunny17):

More help with significant figures? Thanks! ^.^

whitemonsterbunny17 (whitemonsterbunny17):

6271 m / 59.7 s

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you know that your answer has to be 3 sig figs because 59.7 is 3 sig figs

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so just divide normally and round until you get 3 sig figs :)

whitemonsterbunny17 (whitemonsterbunny17):

So when I divide I get 105.0418.... (continues on)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what do you round it to to get 3 sig figs?

whitemonsterbunny17 (whitemonsterbunny17):

105.04 ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

close, but .04 are also sig figs so you'd end up with 5

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the answer would be 105 :) remember to keep the decimal off because then you'd have 105.0 which is 4 sig figs

whitemonsterbunny17 (whitemonsterbunny17):

Okay, okay, but hold on a sec... Significant figures are the SI units... Now, we have to convert m to s... Break that down a bit for me..

OpenStudy (anonymous):

could you not leave it as 105 m/s?

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

distance and speed need to be in same precision is it ? division wont affect significant figures ?

whitemonsterbunny17 (whitemonsterbunny17):

I have no clue, hun.

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

me neither

OpenStudy (anonymous):

because miles is a unit of distances, seconds is a unit of time

OpenStudy (anonymous):

distances wouldnt convert to time, so it'd just stay m/s

OpenStudy (anonymous):

its kinda like miles per hour

whitemonsterbunny17 (whitemonsterbunny17):

Okay, so we can't do anything with those then, right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yepyep.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

just worry about the actual numbers, not the units :)

whitemonsterbunny17 (whitemonsterbunny17):

Okay, so all I need is what's before the decimal point, correct?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

in this case, yep

whitemonsterbunny17 (whitemonsterbunny17):

Okay. \(\Large\bf\rlap{\color{red}{\bigstar~T}\color{gold}{H}\color{greenyellow}{A}\color{lime}{N}\color{cyan}{K~}\color{blue}{Y}\hspace{0 pt}\color{purple}{O}\color{magenta}{U}\color{orchid}{!~\bigstar}}{\color{black}{\; \bigstar~THANK~YOU!~\bigstar}}\)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

do you know the sig fig rules?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

because that kinda helps a lot, obviously :P

whitemonsterbunny17 (whitemonsterbunny17):

I have a list of them, but I don't have them memorized.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

any number that isnt 0 is always sig, any 0's between non zeros like 101 are always sig, the last unit in a number is always sig like the 4 in 1.024, and any 0 left to a decimal point are always sig

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the lest unit one only applies if theres a decimal point tho

whitemonsterbunny17 (whitemonsterbunny17):

Okay, that makes sense.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

those make sense? because i know the rules my teacher made no sense until he gave them to us in layman terms

OpenStudy (anonymous):

cool, glad i could help

whitemonsterbunny17 (whitemonsterbunny17):

Yes, they make sense, I've learned this stuff before, but I forgot it all haha. This is for my Physics/Chemistry class. :p

OpenStudy (anonymous):

figured :P

whitemonsterbunny17 (whitemonsterbunny17):

Thanks again. ^.^
