OpenStudy (waheguru):

Absolute value of x is greater than -7 |x| > -7 How would this look on a number line

OpenStudy (waheguru):

The answer says the whole number line would be shaded, but why?

OpenStudy (phi):

|x| is 0 or positive, no matter what x is. in other words, no matter what number you pick, when you put it inside the absolute value signs, you get a number that is 0 or bigger. and of course bigger than -7

OpenStudy (phi):

to show all x's on the number line that make |x| > -7 true, you end up shading in *all numbers* because they all "work"

OpenStudy (waheguru):

@phi that makes sense but what about if it was |x| < -4

OpenStudy (waheguru):

So this would be unpossible right? Inother words the number line would be blank

OpenStudy (phi):

then no x will work, because |x| ≥0 (it's only zero for x=0, otherwise it's positive)

OpenStudy (phi):

*that should read |x| >= 0

OpenStudy (waheguru):

that makes sense then Thanks!
