To indicate the fact that chromosomes are present in pairs. There are only 23 kinds of chromosomes and not 46 kinds. These 23 chromosomes are in pairs (each pair is similar).

Yeah Abhi is correct..!! out of which 22 pairs are autosomes and remaining one pair is allosomes
