The epic poem Beowulf combines elements of paganism and Christianity. One aspect of paganism is the concept of wyrd, the Old-English word for "fate". What is the role of fate in the poem? Based on your understanding of Beowulf, how do you think Anglo-Saxon society viewed fate? I have to write an essay, and im kind of confused about this topic. Is there any short statements or anything you can tell me to help me get going? Thanks
Have you read the whole poem? Do you remember who dies at the end?
http://www.sparknotes.com/lit/beowulf/section10.rhtml This may help. The role of fate throughout Beowulf seems to be centered around revenge, right? Because after the dragon killed the people of the Geats, Beowulf sought to avenge them. Anglo saxon culture was largely based on honor, courage, strength, fame etc.
So when you think of it from the perspective of other people who were part of the same culture, would it have been dishonorable, demonstrated weakness, or been looked down on if Beowulf chose not to fight the dragon? He knew going into the battle that he would die, and refused the help of his people who offered to go with him.
Does that help?
Yes that helped a lot. thank you so much!
