What does it mean -" Resonance energy is always negative " . Please explain in detail .

OpenStudy (anonymous):

it means resonance or distributing charges make particle stable.negative energy means resonance reduce particle energy

OpenStudy (anonymous):

am i right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I understood the first line , by second do you mean , it reduces the P.E , so it is overall more stable ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

But , this is just factual , I understood superficially , not in depth :(

OpenStudy (anonymous):

if charge concentrate on a specific atom(s) make compound more reactive because forces get strong but when that charge distribute molecule become less reactive then molecule become stable.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Agreed :) , Resonance stabilises the molecule . But , its negative sign signifies that it is being released , i do not get this.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

that's right.look assume magnitude of energy of a subject is X.when it become stable it's potential energy reduce and become Y \[Y <X\].during this process energy released . assume exothermic reaction, products are more stable than reactant. difference between products and reactants energy release \[\Delta H\]

Ahaa! I understood it !

Thanks a lot :) !
