The following is a passage from William Stearns Davis, ed., Readings in Ancient History: Illustrative Extracts from the Sources, 2 Vols. “Baghdad was a veritable City of Palaces, not made of stucco and mortar, but of marble. The buildings were usually of several stories. The palaces and mansions were lavishly gilded and decorated, and hung with beautiful tapestry and hangings of brocade or silk. The rooms were lightly and tastefully furnished with luxurious divans, costly tables, unique Chinese vases and gold and silver ornaments.” —Medieval Sourcebook. Paul Halsall, Fordham University, 1998. The following passage from the Muslim traveler Ibn Battuta's narrative of his travels. Use the passage to answer the following question: I passed through the jewellers' bazaar, and my eyes were dazzled by the varieties of precious stones that I beheld. They were displayed by beautiful slaves wearing rich garments with a waist-sash of silk, who stood in front of the merchants, exhibiting the jewels to the wives of the Turks, while the women were buying them in large quantities and trying to outdo one another. As a result of all this I witnessed a riot—may God preserve us from such! We went on into the ambergris and musk market, and witnessed another riot like it or worse. Public Domain Based on this description what can be deduced about Ibn Battuta? He was a keen observer of economic principles in action. He was reluctant to pass judgment on others. He was concerned about the corrupting influence of wealth. He had strong opinions about the methods of bargaining.
