Simplify the expression 5+4* (8-6)^2

OpenStudy (ashleyisakitty):

First, consider order of operations, or "P.E.M.D.A.S"

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yeah :)

OpenStudy (just_one_last_goodbye):

agreed and i would suggest try posting this on the Math section help will be more faster there

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh yeah sry

OpenStudy (ashleyisakitty):

If you are familiar with the order of operation, what would be the first step?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

8-6 = 2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

sry it said that it was closed so i thought no one could write on it anymore

OpenStudy (ashleyisakitty):

Right. So the equation is now 5+4(2)^2. The next step is "2^2".

OpenStudy (anonymous):

4 :)

OpenStudy (ashleyisakitty):

Right! so, 5+4?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

9

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I think LOL

OpenStudy (ashleyisakitty):

Do you mind that I made a mistake? LOL Let me explain where I guided you falsely. We got to "5+4(2)^2." This translate to "5+4*4" So, from 5+4*4, we know to multiply 4*4 first, which equals to 16. We then add 5 and we have our answer.

OpenStudy (ashleyisakitty):

Complete steps: 5+4(8-6)^2 5+4*2^2 5+4*4 5+16 21

Um it was simplify no answer lol idk if i can use that answer but ty i will enter it thanks for the help ! :)
