OpenStudy (anonymous):

14+3w=8w-3(w-4)

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

And what did you get? What did you do? Where did you have trouble?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i need step by step i dont know what to do

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

Know your order of operations?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

PEMDAS

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

Yes. So, things inside ( ) happen first. (w-4) Well, it is a variable and a number, so nothing to do... Next is multiplication. Do you see anything that could be multiplied?

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

Well, exponents is next, but there were none, so I am skipping to multiplication.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i need you to draw me step by step

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

I'll help you, but I am not going to do your work for you.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i have a headache trying to solve the same problem but i dont knnow to do it

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

Well, like I asked, do you see anything that can be multiplied?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-3and w

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

-3(w-4) Well, the -3 is outside the ( ) so you need to distribute it to both the w and the -4. But good, you saw it. So just distribute it to both and what does the whole thing become?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so is it (-3x4)-3?

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

|dw:1410385682793:dw|

OpenStudy (anonymous):

then

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-3w-1

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I KNEW IT YES

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

-3w is correct, but what is \((-3)\times (-4)\)?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

12!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no the answer is 1 not 12 lol

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i need step by step

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

If you are jumping ahead to the final answer, I don't know, I have not done the entire problem. If you are looking at the distribution part, XVas is correct, it is not -1 is is +12. 14+3w=8w-3(w-4) becomes: 14+3w=8w-3w+12 That is distributing the -3. Now, can you simplify it any more?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i dont understand never mind

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Google it.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Just look up www.mathway.com ,

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you can upgrade to steps if u want

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thanks guys

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

These things are applying the rules like that. So you distribute to get rid of the ( ). Then you can add or subtract and do algebra to move things from one side of the = to the other.
