What are the differences between Renaissance and Classical era Rome and Greece ideals of the mind and body? Also, is man the measure of the universe (if we study man, will we understand the universe better) ?
OOh I just took an exam on this today! Lets see.. what do you know already?
well, I know about stoicism, and the increased knowledge of the human anatomy, the struggle to attach math to humans, naturalism, and polymath
Well, you have the basics, so thats good, here let me type something up. :)
Ok The Renaissance was known as the rebirth of the arts. It was a time when people began to look into the idea of humanism and art, and they also began to question the Catholic church. The Renaissance was highly influenced by ancient greek and rome literature, government, and ideals. But I am sure you already know this. People like Thomas Moore and Martin Luther were trying to explain that even though the Greeks and Romans were Pagan, they still had a utopian type government. (Sorry this took so long im trying to word this right)
I am not sure we are on the same level on this particular topic, but I think I understand the question. Are you asking what separated the Greeks and Romans with the Ren?
yes
and the whole measure man thing
the title of the assignment is vetruvius man
I do not know anything about the Man part, unless your talking about the Ideal Renaissance man, in which case that is someone who excelled and studied in everything. An example of this type of person would be Leonardo Da Vinci.
here is the prompt
During the Renaissance, artists and philosophers became fascinated with bringing together the perfections of geometry with the actual human body, trying to show that at the anatomical level, the male form (sorry ladies, but they were interested in the male and not the female for the most part) was ultimately perfect. This fascination, and to a degree fixation for many of these artists and philosophers, derived from the works of the Roman architect Marcus Vitruvius Pollio, especially his belief in the aesthetic of the symmetry of the male human body as the basis for defining true "beauty". In classical Greece, the human form, especially that of the male, was highly idealized in bronze statuary, which the Romans would copy into marble. Since the Renaissance is the "rebirth" of Classical Green and Roman culture, it is sensible to compare and contrast the ideals of one time with that of the other. So, your task in this essay is to research the Greek and Roman ideal of the human mind and body from Classical times with that of the European ideal of the human mind and body from Renaissance times and to argue for or against the proposition that, "The true measure of the universe is Man" - that is, like Vitruvius basically asserted, by understanding the geometry of the human body, we can understand the geometry of everything else both natural and artificial. However, do not limit yourself to just an anatomical argument, go beyond that and look at the mind, too. Is the human mind, its abiility to think, its ability to imagine and abstract, its ability to solve problems and create new ones, etc., is the human mind like the human body the thing by which we can measure or find value in everything else? Is true "beauty" the combination of human thought and human form? Key Terms to Make Use of: Aesthetic Beauty Form Abstraction Geometry Comprehension Apprehension Creativity Imagination Logic Community Perspective
You see, the question; what separated the Renaissance from the Ancient Greek and Roman Culture; is a tricky one because the Renaissance was something that occurred over a long period of time, (1600's - 1800's to be exact) and the Ren. itself was highly influenced by the Greek and romans. The only difference I can think of off the top of my head would be that the Ancient greek and romans were not christian.
yeah, do you understand better what I'm asking from the prompt?
Oh, I see.. hmm.. I completely understand what you are asking, but I do not really know. Like I said, I either have not learned this part yet, or you are a much higher level learner than me. Then again, I am a freshman in an honors History class.
