which is stronger base? CH3O- or (CH3)3CO-
@ganeshie8 , @iambatman what do you think?
@Dexter810 can you help?
please speak in details
I'll find out which is a better acid . The stronger acid is the one , which has a more stable conjugate base , okay ? So , here : In CH3O- and (CH3)3CO- , (CH3)3CO- has 3 methyl groups , methy groups are +I groups , they are electron donating groups , so they destablise the whole molecule . Whereas there is only 1 methy gropu in CH3O- . So , CH3O- is comparitively more stable . Hence , it is a stronger acid . Thus , (CH3)3CO- is a stronger base .
thanks. you're right but i think if we consider spatial structure of bases we can gain more precise answer.
How do we get by considering spatial structure ??
i read in a book that precise reason of your answer related to solvent.
i mean molecules of solvent assemble around oxygen to stabilize it but in (CH3)3CO- because of methyl groups solvent molecules can't stabilize it.but CH3O- has more less methyl groups.
what do you think @chappy0729 ?
How do molecules of solvent stabilise it ?
assume solvent is water. hydrogen of water molecule is partialy positive.so hydrogens of water molecules assemble around negative oxygen and stabilize negative charge.
Hmmmm..okay okay .
is this correct?
It sounds correct , but not a major reason for it to be more basic I feel ...
if you have another reasons i'm glade to hear?
any way thanks for your helping.
No , the one i mentioned above is the only one I know of..No problem :)
