OpenStudy (bookworm14):

Can someone please help me, I have already made my graphs, now I have to identify whether they are continuous or discrete. I have already googled continuous and discrete but I don't fully understand it... HELP !!!??? (picture of first graph posted below)

OpenStudy (bookworm14):

OpenStudy (phi):

discrete means you plot points. continuous means you "connect the dots" to form a continuous curve.

OpenStudy (bookworm14):

so this would be discrete? (a straight line)

OpenStudy (bookworm14):

@phi

OpenStudy (phi):

unless he sells fractions of a hook (I doubt it), this is discrete. You only have points where the number of hooks is an integer number

OpenStudy (bookworm14):

so on a continuous it can have any # and on a discrete it can't ? and do you think you could help with one more?

OpenStudy (phi):

compare that to distance walked over time. i.e. distance is the y and time is the x there are no "gaps" as you walk, and the graph would be a line.

OpenStudy (bookworm14):

oh okay I see how that works :) , and im gonna post one more graph i think it might be continuous but im not 1,000% sure ...

OpenStudy (bookworm14):

OpenStudy (phi):

1000% is artistic hyperbole, used by people who don't understand math.

OpenStudy (phi):

It depends what you are plotting.

OpenStudy (bookworm14):

it's a figure of speech to say that, thank you very much...I understand most math just fine, I have some of the highest text scores in the state :) ... and I will post the question to show you what i am plotting

OpenStudy (bookworm14):

*test

OpenStudy (phi):

It (sort of) looks like y= x^2 -2 but if it is, then the shape should be more curved (not straight lines) *it's a figure of speech -- yes, but it disseminates a notion to the listener who might think it makes sense

OpenStudy (anwaarullah):

Discrete Values or observations that is counted as distinct and separate and can only take particular values. Examples: the number of kittens in a litter; number of threads in a sheet, number of stars given for an energy rating. so your answer is discrete

OpenStudy (bookworm14):

|dw:1410445734774:dw| @phi I came to get help with my math not be lectured on how I speak. And I know it is supposed to be curved but I did not have that option at the time I made it. and thank you very much @anwaarullah
