A spherical tank of water has a radius of 13 ft, with the center of the tank 50 ft above the ground. How much work will it take to fill the tank by pumping water up from ground level? Assume the water weighs 62.4 lb/ft3. Give your answer to the nearest ft œ lb.

@amistre64

OpenStudy (amistre64):

that worked :)

OpenStudy (amistre64):

first thing is, we need to know the formula for work in order to do some integration with it

OpenStudy (anonymous):

w=Fd?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

or \[W=\int\limits_{b}^{a}F(x)\]

OpenStudy (amistre64):

yeah, and the question seems a bit odd. they are asking work to fill the tank, usually its work to empty the tank

OpenStudy (amistre64):

the distance is going to be from groundlevel so that doesnt change

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I know I really hate this Lol. It was going so well until this problem

OpenStudy (amistre64):

the specs of the tank just give us volume, so if im reading it right, we simply need to lift that volume of water the given height

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok

OpenStudy (amistre64):

so, 63 feet to move whatever the volume is. does the way we move it change the amount of work done? if not, then assume a cylindar pipe of radius 1 or whatever radius is simplest to work with

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok got it
