http://awesomescreenshot.com/0fb3h1cd25 I initially solved this incorrectly but I multiplied 3 by 24 and got 72...is that the correct way to go about this?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

\[3p+24=240\] solve for \(p\)

OpenStudy (aq99):

P = 72

OpenStudy (aq99):

3 x P + 24 = 240 where P = 72

OpenStudy (phi):

The first step is get clear that the formula c( p) = 3p+24 is a formula where you "put in" number of people, and "get out" number of cookies. in other words, c( p) is the # of cookies. they tell you 240 cookies. That means replace c( p) with 240 and write 240= 3p+24 or 3p+24= 240 now it is a "standard equation" there is a recipe... (do lots of these problems until it's automatic): add -24 to both sides 3p + 24 - 24 = 240-24 simplify 3p = 216 next, divide both sides by 3 (3/3)p = 216/3 p = 72

OpenStudy (aq99):

yeah phi is right

Thank you @AQ99 and @phi I understand now (:
