Average speed and velocity from a simple line graph, please help.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Find the average speed and velocity of the given graph from 0 to 9 seconds.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@ProfBrainstorm so I know speed is distance/ time, and velocity is just speed with a direction??

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Maybe in this context, average speed means total distance travelled/ time, whereas velocity means net displacement/time ? Possibly ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So would it be 1+2+3+3+3+2+1 for the distance traveled? or would I do the distance formula in segments and add that up?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so doing the distance formula for each of the slopes I got ((3sqrt2+3+sqrt13))

I don't understand what you're doing above. Are you clear in your mind as to what the graph represents ? It is telling you about the position of a particle that is moving in one dimension, the graph itself is not the path of the particle. From the graph, see if you can describe the motion of the particle in normal language.
