Ive been struggling on this study guide for quite some time and I really need some help with this question! Evaluate the following expression using the given values: Find x - 3y if x = 3 and y = -2. -9 -3 3 9

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The answer I got was -2 but it isn't a option.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what grade r u in?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

8th..

OpenStudy (anonymous):

cool, i'm in 7th but i'll still try to help:)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh thank you!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i got -3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So simplified it would be 3 - 3(-2) Right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Then you would bring it down to 3 - (-6)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Is that correct?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

For this you just plug in the numbers to what they are equal to so.... (3)-3(-2) you first do the multiplication 3+6 =9 Hope this helped!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

But the Six is negative.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh and if you have a negative multiplied by another negative you always get a positive

OpenStudy (anonymous):

But the first 3 isn't negative.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so if you have -3*-2 it equals 6

OpenStudy (anonymous):

THen3+6 is 9.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yep

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh I see! Thank you so much!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Glad to help! Have a nice day!
