Create The Scenario For The Following Expression: (x+3)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Pick a noun to be x. It can be marbles, puppies, trees...What would you like?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Cookies I Guess .. I Just Don't Understand The Question

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It's sort of like...instead of reading a word problem and writing an equation from it, you're being given an equation and being asked to write the problem

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So if your x represents cookies, the expression x+3 is telling you what is happening to the cookies?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I Understand That But Im Sorry I Got The Equation Wrong, The Equation Is 2(x+3)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ahh, well you can still apply the same principles to the expression. Say..."Bob has x cookies, then Sally gives him 3 more. Then Rick gives Bob twice as many cookies as he had after seeing Sally. How may cookies does Bob have now?"

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So I Should Put That On My Homework ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You can. Or you can change it a little. But do you understand how that answers the question?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Not Really, Can You Give A Example Please ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Using the Bob and cookies example, if you read, "Bob has x cookies and Sally gives him 3 more," do you understand that Bob would then have x+3 cookies?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ohh Yes,Now I Understand So The Equation x-4 Using Candy Bars ..So If I Say " Damaris Has x Candy Bars And Zhanise Gives Her 4 More"

OpenStudy (anonymous):

For the situation you wrote, Zhanise giving Damaris 4 more cookies means Damaris' number of cookies increases. So that would be x+4.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So That Would Be Right ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You typed x-4? I can't tell if it's a typo or not xD

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The Equation Is x-4 .. I Have To Write Another Scenario For The Equation

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh, you're close! Here's a hit: it says "x-4" and not "x+4," so you're trying to describe a situation where 4 is *taken away* from x. Does that help?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So Like What Scenario Would I Write For That ? I Really Dont Understand This Equation As Better As The Other One

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Damaris has x candy bars and Zhanise gives her 4 more. If you wanted tried to write an expression for the number of cookies Damaris has now, you'd write x+4, right? What about if I said: Damaris has x candy bars and gives Zhanise 4 of her candy bars. What expression would you get from that?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

That Would Still Be x+4 Right ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It should be x-4, because if Damaris gives 4 candy bars away, it means Damaris has 4 fewer candy bars than originally.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh So It Would Be x-4

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Right!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I Understand Now

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Awesome :)
