write a burlesque of an event in your life or in the life of a celebrity. Remember, a burlesque plays on contradiction between a subject and the way it is treated. Twain used humor to describe serious, sometimes awful, events, but you can turn it around and present something fun or happy in a very serious way – the choice is yours. i have to write atleast fivesentences

Ever made jokes at a wedding? or a funeral? That would work.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i don't know how to even start, please help me

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

Well, you can start by picking an event or looking up burlesque to make sure yo get the correct thing.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i want to writ about the time i went to my gmas funeral and i was only 9 but i made a toast.. but how do i make it into a burlesque?

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

Hmmm... well... that is an odd one to pic. Do you get what a burlesque is?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yea its a story that you have to make it funny or sad with meanings that don't contradict eachother

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

from the OED: An absurd or comically exaggerated imitation of something, especially in a literary or dramatic work; a parody:

OpenStudy (anonymous):

idk how to start, can u start me off and ill go from there, pleasee

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

The wikipedia page explains more in the first two paragraphs: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burlesque So as you can see, it basically makes fun of the situation. Ever pretended to be someone, spoke sort of like them, but were doing it sarcastically and making fun of them? Like in the first Harry Potter movie when Ron is making fun of Herminoi and says, "You are doing it wrong! It is wingardium levioooooohsaa" in an exaggerated voice.

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

That sort of exageration, making fun of the event, is one example of something used in burlesque. But as a burlesque, you make fun of basically everything, not just one person.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

that's not helping:(

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

Hmmm.... well, something sad would be told as if it were happy. Something serious as if it was comical.

OpenStudy (wwhitlock):

I'm not sure if Gramma's funeral is a good choice. We're talking about goofy ministers making a mockery of the ceremony, pall bearers dropping the casket and mourners ridiculously over playing the weeping and wailing. Perhaps you don't quite get the idea of burlesque.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

omg so what can i talk about? i have to do this assighment within the hour

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

Well, it also says celebrity. So you have a lot of choices.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay, so can u give me like a three sentence example of one about whatever and ill use it as a guide on where to start

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

Well, there are a bunch of poems: http://www.poetrysoup.com/poems/burlesque And this has a definition and a link to an example: http://www.shmoop.com/literature-glossary/burlesque.html

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

In A Modest Proposal by Jonathan Swift, the author says he has a solution to povery and hunger, well, "A Modest Proposal for Preventing the Children of Poor People From Being a Burthen to Their Parents or Country, and for Making Them Beneficial to the Publick" His suggestion is cannibalism. In a very serious tone he puts forward eating people as a solution. This is burlesque because it is treating something horrific as normal. He turned the values of the people on their ear to expose the ridiculousness of many other suggestions put forward before his paper.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

wait, is that an example from u? or is that one u found online?

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

It is one I know of. I am not going to try and write a burlesque in seconds. So I took a known example.
