What is the difference between |–3| and –3?

OpenStudy (aum):

The absolute bars converts a negative into a positive. |-3| = 3. So the first one is positive 3 and the second one is negative 3.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so -3 is negative and the 3 is possitive?

OpenStudy (aum):

yes. |-3| = +3 (positive) -3 is just -3 (negative)

OpenStudy (aum):

+3 is same as 3 and they are both positive -3 is negative. But |-3| = 3. The absolute bar changes negative 3 to a positive 3.

thanks

OpenStudy (aum):

|-5| = 5 (absolute bar changes negative five to positive five). |8| = 8 (absolute bar has no effect on positive numbers. Here it leaves positive eight as positive eight). |-83| = 83 |57| = 57 You are welcome.
