9t - 6 - 6t = 6

OpenStudy (cj49):

combine the like terms -9t-6t=-15t 6+6=12 t=-12/15=-4/5

OpenStudy (phi):

if you have 9 t's and take away 6 t's how many t's do you have left ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

3 t's

OpenStudy (cj49):

sorry for the minus sign its 9t-6t=3t

OpenStudy (phi):

yes. that means you can simplify 9t - 6 - 6t = 6 to 3t -6 = 6 (we simplified 9t-6t to 3t) now add +6 to both sides. we write +6 on both sides: 3t - 6 + 6 = 6 + 6 can you simplify the right side? what is 6+6 on the left, what is -6+6 ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

0

OpenStudy (phi):

and on the right side ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

12

OpenStudy (phi):

so that means 3t - 6 + 6 = 6 + 6 is simplified to 3t +0 = 12 3t+0 is still 3t (adding 0 does not change it) so 3t= 12 last step: divide both sides by 3 (3/3)t = 12/3 and simplify

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh, I understand. Thank you!

If you have time (or questions) Khan's videos are good http://www.khanacademy.org/math/cc-seventh-grade-math/cc-7th-variables-expressions/cc-7th-2-step-equations/v/why-we-do-the-same-thing-to-both-sides-two-step-equations (if the link does not show properly, refresh your browser)

Yeah, I use that sometimes
