why is the product of any two consecutive numbers even?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Because one of them is always going to be an even number, and an even number times anything is always even

OpenStudy (anonymous):

And if you want to know why that is, I can attempt to explain that too

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Can you explain a little more?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

2X3=6 3x4=12 4x5=20

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Every even number can be written as 2 * some number

OpenStudy (anonymous):

For example, 6=2*3. 50=2*25. And so on. When you are able to split a number into two equal parts (integers only), then it is an even number

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

By definition, a number is called even if it is divisible by 2 Since you're taking product of two consecutive numbers, one of them would be a multiple of 2 for sure

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So if you looked at two consecutive numbers, it can be 9*10 for example. 9*10=9*5*2=45*2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

And by definition, the number that results from 45*2 is divisible by 2 (90)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh wow, it makes more sense now. Thank you!
