I'm having trouble finding the value of x for

OpenStudy (anonymous):

x for what?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Sorry, I accidently sent it before I was done typing. I'm trying to find the value of x for 3(x+1)-5x= 12-(6x-7)

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

First distribute 3(x+1)-5x= 12-(6x-7) 3x+3-5x= 12-6x+7 and then combine like terms 3x+3-5x= 12-6x+7 -2x+3= -6x+19 I'll let you finish up

OpenStudy (anonymous):

From -2x + 3= -6x+ 19 I subracted three from both sides to get -2x= -6x+16 From there, I added -6x to both sides to get -8x = 16, and I lastly divided them by negative 8 to get -2. But when I checked it over and inserted the -2 it didn't work. Can someone point out what I did wrong? -_-

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

you made an error when you went from -2x= -6x+16 to -8x = 16

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

you do add 6x to both sides, that much is correct

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

however, -2x + 6x = 4x and not -8x

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh! Thank you!

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

you're welcome
