OpenStudy (darkbluechocobo):

The runners ran on a 1-mile circle track, 5 times around in 1 hour and stopped 20 feet from the starting point . What is the velocity

geerky42 (geerky42):

\(velocity = \dfrac{displacement}{time}\) Displacement mean "distance" from starting position to final position.

geerky42 (geerky42):

Displacement is distance from start point and final point, which is 20 feet. Does that make sense?

geerky42 (geerky42):

@DarkBlueChocobo ?

OpenStudy (darkbluechocobo):

sorry im back

OpenStudy (darkbluechocobo):

@geerky42 yes that makes sense

geerky42 (geerky42):

Yeah, so just 20ft / 1hr. Simple lol.

OpenStudy (darkbluechocobo):

you jsut had to find the displacement?

geerky42 (geerky42):

It is already given. "stopped 20 feet from the starting point"

OpenStudy (darkbluechocobo):

So question on this one The car drove 100 km on a windy road to a city 80 km away in two hours. find the velocity would the displacement be 20?

geerky42 (geerky42):

ohh, now this question makes sense. No, displacement is 80km, because where car started, the city is 80km away. so displacement is 80km, regardless of how windy road is.

geerky42 (geerky42):

Took him two hours to get there, so you have 80km / 2 hr

geerky42 (geerky42):

If you were asked for speed, then you would need to know distance, which is 100km

OpenStudy (darkbluechocobo):

ohhh ok. so just since the city is 80 km away the windy ness doesnt matter or the distance it took to get there?

geerky42 (geerky42):

For distance, it does matter. Basically distance is how much you travelled. Displacement is just how long between starting point and final point.

OpenStudy (darkbluechocobo):

alright so in this case it would be 80/2 to find the velocity?

geerky42 (geerky42):

Yeah

OpenStudy (darkbluechocobo):

alright thanks again :D

geerky42 (geerky42):

Welcome, I take that you are currently taking physics?

OpenStudy (darkbluechocobo):

Yes i am

OpenStudy (darkbluechocobo):

I decided to take precal and physics in the same year im still deciding if my decision was good

geerky42 (geerky42):

You said you are planning to study engineering or something, right? Physics and calculus are good things to know for engineering.

OpenStudy (darkbluechocobo):

Yes i plan on it :p Computer engineering

geerky42 (geerky42):

oh, yeah, then you did make good decision, I believe.

OpenStudy (darkbluechocobo):

:3 yay

geerky42 (geerky42):

Senior, right?

OpenStudy (darkbluechocobo):

Yups

geerky42 (geerky42):

Oh cool. just asking. See you around :)

OpenStudy (darkbluechocobo):

Alright :p
