3xsquared + 17x + 10 How do I factor this out?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

(3x+2)(x+5)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

10xsquared-19x+6?

How do you keep straight the numbers you try out?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

What do you mean by 'keep straight'?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I mean, I'm plugging in 5x+6 and 2x+1...doesn't work, so I plug in 10x +6 and 1x+1...and so on to try to see wha

Since you have 3x^2 as the squared term you know that the two numbers that have an x in front of them are going to be 1 and 3. so one side will be 3x+something and one side will be x+something. then u just find 2 numbers that multiply to make the last term (5 and 2) and plug them into the equation and find a spot where they make sense.
