OpenStudy (kl0723):

\[(-4a^5b)^2 ?\] Like this?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yep

OpenStudy (kl0723):

ok so you will need to distribute the exponent (2) to the whole expression inside the parenthesis :)

OpenStudy (kl0723):

you have \[4^2\] then you have \[(a^5)^2\] and last \[b^2\]

OpenStudy (kl0723):

so now you have 4 to the second power is 16... (a) to the fifth power raised to the second power... just muliply the exponents and that is (a) to the tenth power and last... b to the second power
