7(6-2a)=5(-3a+1)

OpenStudy (stefrheart):

You need to distribute the 7 into the parenthesis and same as the 5

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I did already

OpenStudy (stefrheart):

so what would it look like?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

42-14a=-15a+5

OpenStudy (stefrheart):

all right so next you need to combine either the a's or the whole numbers WHat would you like to try first?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I don't know what you mean

OpenStudy (stefrheart):

Well now you need to combine like terms

OpenStudy (anonymous):

can u show me please

OpenStudy (stefrheart):

42-14a=-15a+5 +14a +14a 42=-1a+5 - 5 -5 37=-1a ----------- -1 -1 -37=a

OpenStudy (stefrheart):

Do you understand?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no not really

OpenStudy (stefrheart):

what math are you in?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

algebra 1

OpenStudy (stefrheart):

okay so this isnt the first time you have seen problems like this right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no

OpenStudy (stefrheart):

would you like for me to explain in more detail?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes but its getting late

OpenStudy (zephyr141):

look at the equation. the equal sign means that the left side is equal to the right side. now what is going on is that you're finding "a". now to do that you must simplify what you see, meaning adding/subtracting/dividing/multiplying what you can. so in this instance we can distribute or multiply everything in the parenthesis by 7. that's the distribution rule or something. now we have individual terms and can "move" them around freely. this means that to isolate(or to find) "a" you need to take some terms, like the numbers or the number with the a attached, and "move" them to the other side. now you see the term not attached to another number so you can just subtract from one side to eliminate it but remember that the equation is equal so whatever you do on one side you must also do on the other. repeat this process to find "a".

OpenStudy (stefrheart):

wow @zephyr141 explained it very thoroughly

OpenStudy (anonymous):

im soving for a

OpenStudy (zephyr141):

step 1-try to see if you can add/subtract/multiply/divide any number. step 2-combine like terms like 42 and 5 or 14a and -15a. they're like terms in the sense that the first two are unattached. the second pair are like terms because they both have "a" step 3-finally to isolate (or to find) "a" you divide the number attached to "a" in the equation to get "a" alone. but remember to do that for the other side as the equation is equal to each other.

I got it now thx u was very nice and good help
