I had a question on a quick assesment that asked: whitch of the following makes the statment true; 1/5^0 it said the answer was 1 why is this?

OpenStudy (sleepyhead314):

any number to the 0th power is 1 so you have 1/1 = 1

OpenStudy (nfcfox):

Because any number to the 0th power is 1. There is some long explanation and tbh i have never learned why. You just need to know that to the 0th power is 1.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thats .... confusing....

OpenStudy (nfcfox):

Why? 1^0 is 1 and 5^0 is 1 so 1/1=1

OpenStudy (anonymous):

but why is and a number to the 0 1?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@mitchal can you help?

OpenStudy (nfcfox):

Like I said there is some explanation.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

sure

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay when the 5 over 0 it means it turn into 1

OpenStudy (anonymous):

why is a number to the 0th 1?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so 1/5^0 is simply as 1/1

OpenStudy (anonymous):

idk it just the way it is if you see the zero power it turn into a 1

OpenStudy (anonymous):

sleepyhead314 gave me this https://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20110829064135AADJHdI but its a little confusing

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeah everyboyd making it harder than it looks

OpenStudy (nfcfox):

It's essentially saying any number multiplying itself has to be greater than 1 in order to become greater. If you do .5 * .5 wont you agree you get .25?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thanks well at least i know why i got it wrong lol i guessed - 1 since 1/5 is less than 1 whole *shrugs*

OpenStudy (anonymous):

lol
