solve the absolute value equation

OpenStudy (anonymous):

\[2\left[ x+4 \right]-9=1\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

add 9 divide by 2 those are the first two steps to get to \[|x+4|=5\]

ok

1) add 9 to both sides of the equation: \[2\left| x+4 \right|=10\] 2) divide by 2 on both sides: \[\left| x+4 \right|=5\] 3) since absolute value means to take the positive value, the potential values of the equation are 5 and -5. so then you end up with x+4=5 or x+4=(-5). Solve for x and you get x=1 or x=-9. Both answers are potential values of x.
