OpenStudy (asiyahh):

Line PB has endpoints at -2 and 12. What is the coordinate of its midpoint?

OpenStudy (mrnood):

To find the length between 2 points you subtract the coordinates. SO Subtract the coordinates. THEN the midpoint is halfway between them so the distance to the midpoint is half the length. Then add that distance to the smaller of the two originals. Alternatively - find the average of the 2 coordinates.

OpenStudy (asiyahh):

So would the anwser be -9? or did i do something wrong

OpenStudy (asiyahh):

@MrNood

OpenStudy (mrnood):

you did something wrong. show oyur working...

OpenStudy (asiyahh):

So i subtracted -2- 12 and got -14. Then i divided -14 by 2 and got -7 then i added -7 and -2 and got -9. I tried using your steps but i probly got them confused @MrNood

OpenStudy (mrnood):

OK - you have done most of the hard work. You need to be aware of the 'direction' of the numbers you are working with - in general we write smaller numbers to the left of larger numbers. It is perfectly OK to subtract -2-12, bu this means you are measuring from right to left If that is the case then you need to work backwards from 12 to get the midpoint. The other option is to do 12- -2......

OpenStudy (asiyahh):

So is it 5?

OpenStudy (mrnood):

check that by finding the average of the points... (add tehm and divide by 2..)

OpenStudy (asiyahh):

okay so im right. Thank you so much!
