What is the "cultural context" and how does it influence development? @iambatman @nincompoop @adrynicoleb @arabpride @CrazyCountryGirl @Elsa213 @PixieDust1 @Secret-Ninja @fateal @caitlinnr14

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

Well, do you get the terms as words? Culture and context?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

not at all

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Wait is it like, we all grew up in different cultures so the influence of development is like all different because of our own culture?

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

Well, context is sort of like a relationship or limitation. If I say, "bit" in the context of machine tools, you would know it was a drill bit or some other cutting tool bit. The context gives added meaning.

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

And yes, that is a good way of putting it. Culture is a lot dependent on where we grew up and who our parents are. So the culture of say a first generation American will be split between what they learn at home, some foreign culture, and school, American. This shows how both heritage and location play a role in culture.

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

Dominant American Culture, or DAC, has many things it sees as norms. For example, sex at age 14 is a big no-no in DAC. However, in some cultures, 13 and 14 year old girls are married off and expected to start having children. We generally call these primitive cultures because DAC sees this as a barbaric practice.

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

The Cultural Contexts are different. In DAC, we see that as too young because of the context. But in those "primitive" cultures they are looking at when a girl becomes physically able to be impregnated and wonder why we are waiting until later.

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

Now, can you see how a cultural context would change development? Think about how much Asian families push chidren for education from an early age vs. the USA. Or how Asians do more group activities than in the USA. What differences do you think that would produce in the development of a person?

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

I nead to head out, but I hope that gives you something to work with.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

it did, thanksss
