Whats the problem?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

For the function y = f(x), what is the ordered pair for the point on the graph when x = 3n - 4? (3n - 4, f(n)) (3n - 4, f(3n - 4)) (x, f(3n)) (x, 3n - 4)

@Lexi00

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i would say the first one but not100% sure

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thanks for trying but y do you say so

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It's the last one. (x, 3n-4)

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

Plug in the value of x where you see x. (x, f(x)) (3n - 4, f(3n - 4))

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

The ordered pair (3n - 4, f(3n - 4)) means: The point whose x-coordinate is 3n - 4, and whose y-coordinate is the function f(x) evaluated at 3n - 4.

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

For any function f(x), the ordered pairs are: (x, f(x)) Since in this case x = 3n - 4, we replace x with 3n - 4, and we get (3n - 4, f(3n - 4)).

thanks so much @mathstudent55

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

You're welcome.

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

Another way of remembering this. The ordered pairs are usually (x, y). In this problem you are told that y is the function f. You are given that y = f(x). Replace y with f(x) in the ordered pair, and you get (x, f(x)) Now, in this case, when x = 3n - 4, replace x with 3n - 4 in both x and in f(x), and you get our answer.
