Which of the following equations best represents the line segment AB? y = -3x + 2 y = -2x + 1 y = -3x - 2 y = -2x - 1

will post pic in sec

OpenStudy (imstuck):

All of those equations are in slope-intercept form. The coefficient in front of the x represents the slope of the line (rise over run), and the number at the end that is added or subtracted is where the line intersects the the y axis. Let's have a look at what your pic is.

OpenStudy (imstuck):

The line goes through the y axis at a positive 2. So the last number, the one at the end of the equation, is represented by this intercept. So you have y = mx + 2 so far (m is the slope, which we are going to find right now.)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok

OpenStudy (imstuck):

From the y intercept of 2, count how many spaces you have to go down AND over before the line goes through another point on the graph perfectly. If you notice, the line goes through (1,-1) also. So that point from the y intercept is down 3 and to the right one. The slope is then -3/1 (even though this slope goes downward, we still call it a "rise"). So your equation is y = -3x + 2. Is that a choice?

If you don't understand this and you need more help on it, I can give you a few more examples to solidify its meaning.

yes :)

know thanks
