Hello, can someone help me do the following things? 1) Explain the difference between Ser & Estar 2) Explain the difference between Saber & Conocer. 3) Give an example of each verb in a sentence to illustrate your explanation. (4 sentences) @One098 @gelidium Thanks Guys!

OpenStudy (one098):

Sure!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thanks from what I understand both Estar and Ser are "to be" one of corse is present and one is past tense I think...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

And Saber and Conocer are both to know.

OpenStudy (one098):

Yes, ser is the passive verb and estar is the active verb; ser tells what something is and estas refers more to what something does.

OpenStudy (one098):

Yes^

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ok so that parts good

OpenStudy (one098):

Now, for 2, saber is what's used to express knowledge meanwhile, use conocer to say that one is or not acquainted with a person, a place, or an object. Make sense?

OpenStudy (one098):

*you use..

OpenStudy (one098):

Now for the sentences.. A mi me gustaria ser un enfermero. Yo estoy un poco confundido. El hombre sabe manejar un carro. Yo lo conozco muy bien. Have to go, sorry, and good luck!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes thank you and then the 4 sentences is where I really need help.

OpenStudy (one098):

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh ok thank you bye I understand now

OpenStudy (anonymous):

A mi me gusto ser un enfermero. Yo estoy un poco caliente. Mi madre sabe unidad un carro. Yo lo conozco muy bien. Whenever you are back on can you let me know if these loo good?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Look* @One098

OpenStudy (one098):

hey, im back, but for the first change 'me gusto', to 'me gustaria'.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Alright Thank You! What form is Gustaria?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@One098

OpenStudy (one098):

Me gusto is I liked, Me gustaria is I would like.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ok Thank You so much for the help!

OpenStudy (one098):

You're most welcome, anytime!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Theres my final thing: SER vs. ESTAR: Ser is a passive verb and estar is an active verb; ser tells what something is and estar refers more to what something does. SABER vs. CONOCER: Saber is used to express knowledge while, conocer is used to say that one is or is not acquainted with a person, a place, or an object. Example sentences: Mi me gustaria ser un enfermero. Yo estoy un poco caliente. Mi madre sabe unidad un carro. Yo lo conozco muy bien. Thanks again for the help :D

OpenStudy (one098):

Yes, that's perfect!!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

:)

Notice that these two sentences can have different meanings in English. The apple is green. (Meaning the apple is not ripe.) The apple is green. (Meaning the color of the apple is green.) In the first case, our example speaks of the condition of the apple. The apple is green because it has not yet ripened. When the condition of the apple changes, that is, when it has ripened, it will no longer be green, it will be ripe. In the second case, our example speaks of the essential characteristics of the apple. The apple is green in color. This particular apple remains green even after it has ripened. This is the difference between ser and estar@Kyle220406

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thanks @gelidium. I actually need help correcting two things real quick. Either of you have like 3 minutes or so? @gelidium @One098

OpenStudy (one098):

Yeah, I do.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

My Spanish teacher doesn't like these definitions for some reason she just literally put "NO" next to the sentence. "Ser is a passive verb and ester is an active verb; ser tells what something is and estar refers more to what something does. NO" and she didn't like this sentence: Mi madre sabe unidad un carro.

OpenStudy (one098):

Well then tell her to write them for you... <_< No but seriously, um I dont know... That's what I was taught.

OpenStudy (one098):

For the sentence, write Mi madre sabe cocinar.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Alright Thanks for the sentence that should work and for the definition Idk what to put cause what you put looked good to me as well.

OpenStudy (one098):

No problem and sorry about that.. :/

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I'm going to try to come up with something I will get back to you :)

OpenStudy (one098):

Okay! c:

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Hey does this look good? Ser and estar both mean, “to be”. Ser is used when you are talking about the following things: origin and nationality, personality, physical attributes, profession, possession, date and time, and relationships. Estar is used to talk about the following things: location, mood and physical condition, and the result of an action. @One098

OpenStudy (one098):

Yes, that looks really good to me.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ok thanks :D

OpenStudy (one098):

Lol its ok. Good luck!

OpenStudy (gelidium):

SER is always used to indicate essential qualities or permanent characteristics For example, Soy hispanica Eres alto Kyle es extrovertido. El oso polar es peludo. I used ser because is a permanent condition that I can't change. ESTAR is always used to indicate conditions or temporal characteristics that can change. For example, Estoy enfermo hoy Kyle esta alegre durante la fiesta. La comida esta sabrosa. You can see the following examples and explanations. 1. The apple is green. (Meaning the apple is not ripe.) In the first case, our example speaks of the condition of the apple. The apple is green because it has not yet ripened. When the condition of the apple changes, that is, when it has ripened, it will no longer be green, it will be ripe. 2. The apple is green. (Meaning the color of the apple is green.) In the second case, our example speaks of the essential characteristics of the apple. The apple is green in color. This particular apple remains green even after it has ripened. In English, the verb "to be" can be used to tell how something is (the condition) and what something is (the essence). How is the apple? It is unripe. What color is the apple? It is green. In Spanish, a different verb is used to express "to be" depending on whether the speaker intends to address a condition or an essential quality. La manzana esta verde. The apple is green. (condition) La manzana es verde. The apple is green. (essence) Note how the adjective "verde" actually changes meaning, depending upon whether it is used with ser or estar. La manzana esta verde. (condition: verde = unripe) La manzana es verde. (essential characteristic: verde = color green) To address CONDITION, use ESTAR. Estar is an irregular verb. It does not follow the standard rules of conjugation for regular -ar verbs. Therefore, you must memorize it. estar estoy estás está estamos estáis están To address an ESSENTIAL QUALITY, use SER. Ser is also irregular and must be memorized. ser soy eres es somos sois son If you are talking about WHAT something is, use SER; if you are talking about HOW something is, use ESTAR. What is she like? She is quiet. Use ser: Ella es callada. How is she acting? She is being quiet. Use estar: Ella esta callada. I hope you @Kyle220406 are better now.
