OpenStudy (anonymous):

0.5(x-3)+(1.5-x)=5x

TheSmartOne (thesmartone):

distribute the .5 and 1.5 and move all the variables. show what you did and then from there I can help you...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

.5x-1.5+1.5-x=5x

OpenStudy (anonymous):

there is nothing to distrubute into right side

TheSmartOne (thesmartone):

Ok now move all the terms with x onto one side...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thats where im stuck on i know the answer will come out to 0 but i have no idea how to get to that point i not sure which direction to add like terms

TheSmartOne (thesmartone):

Ok

TheSmartOne (thesmartone):

.5x-1.5+1.5-x=5x So lets simplify. -1.5+1.5=0 so .5x-x=5x

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oooooooooooooooooooooh i just realized

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ive been getting zero thi whole time but i thought you cant bring down a zero

TheSmartOne (thesmartone):

now lets add x on both sides .5x-x+x=5x+x -x+x=0 so .5x=6x subtract .5x to both sides .5x-.5x=6x-.5x

TheSmartOne (thesmartone):

Then you will get 0=5.5x and obviously x will have to equal to 0..

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok thanks for the help

TheSmartOne (thesmartone):

because 0/5.5 =x and o over anything equals to 0.

TheSmartOne (thesmartone):

Don't get confused when someother number over 0 is not equal to 0 it is undefined...

TheSmartOne (thesmartone):

For example\[\frac{ 0 }{ 5 }=0\]

TheSmartOne (thesmartone):

and \[\frac{ 5 }{ 0 }=undefined\]

TheSmartOne (thesmartone):

Do you get it?
