Please help. A man drives for a while at 40mph. Realizing that he is running late he increases speed to 62 mph and completes at 395 mile trip in 8 hours. How long does he drive at 40mph? It asks me to use two equations in two variables to solve the problem.

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

Let's say he drove distance d at 40 mph.

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

The total distance he drove was 395 miles. Using d, how much distance did he drive at 62 mph?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

do you want me to add 40 and 65 together?

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

No. 40 mph and 62 mph are average speeds. You can't add them together.

I'll help you understand my question with a drawing. See below
