how many number of permutations of the word thermomether?

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

As a start : count number of letters in the given word

OpenStudy (anonymous):

11

OpenStudy (anonymous):

not to butt in, but is there a typo here, or is it really " thermomether"

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

thermomet `h`er

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i can't find that word on an on line dictionary might it be " thermometer" ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I'm sorry it's THERMOMETER

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

then 11 is the total number of letters in the word :) so we need to figure out how many 11 letter words can be formed using these

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

have you worked problems like these before ?

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

do you knw how to find the total permutations if all the letters are different ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

it's my first time. i don't know how to solve this till the end :(

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i don't know how to begin and end.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

how many 11 letter words can be formed using these. Is it 1 only?

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

Not really, take a quick small example first : `cat`

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

we can rearrange the letters in 6 ways to form 6 different words: `cat` `cta` `act` `atc` `tac` `tca`

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

don't wry about the meaning of cta, just see that we can rearrange them like that

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh okay. :)

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

listing all the possible permutations is a pain in the neck. so lets derive a formula for this

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

since in the previous example we have `3` characters : |dw:1412650078010:dw|

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

For the first position, you can pick any one of the 3 available characters : c, a, t so 3 ways for first position |dw:1412650143821:dw|
