Someone please help me! I dont understand .... Quincy had a coupon for his favorite clothing store. He received a discount of eleven dollars on a pair of jeans that originally cost fifty-five dollars. Set up a percent proportion to determine the percent discount he received with his coupon. Which of the following is a denominator in the proportion?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@homeschoolgal please help

OpenStudy (anonymous):

hi may u please help??

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I'm sorry. I'm a math whiz, but not a big one. This is a bit complicated for me. If you need help with adding, subtracting, dividing, or multiplying fractions i'm here. If you need help with radius or circles i'm here. If you need with turning fractions in decimals or decimals in fraction or improper fractions to mixed numbers Then I'm here. But, for this I'm not.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok it alright... thanks anyway :) i appreciate it

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No prob.

OpenStudy (k_lynn):

I think I can help you :) Do you know anything about solving this problem?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

awesome :) yeah a little

OpenStudy (k_lynn):

ok, what do you know?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ik that 11 goes over 55 and that you have to multiply and turn things into decimals. lol i suck terribly at math

OpenStudy (k_lynn):

What I think you'll do is put the 55 over 11 because 55 was the ORIGINAL price. THen I think you'll divide to get the percentage off...though I'm not totally sure

OpenStudy (k_lynn):

@e.mccormick can you help?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

5% off?? lol im stumped

OpenStudy (k_lynn):

no. that's a positive 5. I"m thinking 50% off...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh

OpenStudy (k_lynn):

I think I just confused you more...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

haha lol :D nahh im fine i just need help thats it

OpenStudy (k_lynn):

Oh my gosh...i got it. It just hit me. Just a sec

OpenStudy (k_lynn):

percents are out of 100 right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh ok cool

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

like pennies

OpenStudy (k_lynn):

ok so you put the info you know into a proportion like this, correct? |dw:1412711288496:dw|

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes

OpenStudy (k_lynn):

ok, so do you know what to do after that?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i think it hit me too! awesome :)

OpenStudy (k_lynn):

So, you'll cross multiply the 11 and 100 then divide by 55, right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes!

OpenStudy (k_lynn):

to get x which I think equals 20%

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes

OpenStudy (k_lynn):

I think I learned something, too :D lol

OpenStudy (anonymous):

haha cool :)

OpenStudy (k_lynn):

Happy to help you.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thx @k_lynn
