systems of equations: x+y=-2 3y+12=-6x Please explain the steps so that I can actually learn what I am doing. Thanks

isolate one variable. in this case use the 1st equation to obtain y=-x-2. then use the variable y to replace "y" in the second equation: 3(-x-2)+12=-6x. solve for x.

i got x=-2 check your answer

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yep i got x=-2

i got x=-2, then plugged it back in, and got 3y=0. I am sure that is not going to work. as the answer in the book says "only one solution"
