OpenStudy (countrygirl1431):

In this chemical equation, why is the number of atoms the same on each side of the arrow? Matter cannot be created or destroyed. Chemical reactions produce new matter. Chemical reactions reduce matter but create energy.

You need to have the same amount of one element on one side as you do on the other. Otherwise the reaction cannot take place. Think of it as baking a cake. The recipe calls for two cups of sugar. If you add two cups of sugar (assuming that the rest of the ingredients were added properly), the cake will come out properly. However, if you only add one cup of sugar, an entirely different cake will come out, probably one for which you weren't hoping. Hope that helped.
