Is 2 an element of the following sets: a) {2,{2}} b) {{2},{{2}}} c) {{2},{2,{2}}} d) {{{2}}}

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I really do not understand how to tell at all.. I think for part a that yes 2 is a part of the set, and there is also a subset containing 2.

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

yes, 2 is in set A but 2 is not in set B, C or D if you said {2} was in set B, then you'd be correct

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

2 is different from {2}

Thanks Jim.

np

OpenStudy (perl):

you can think of a set as a bag with something (or nothing) inside it.

OpenStudy (perl):

and inside your bag you can have other bags (sets)

OpenStudy (perl):

order does not count in your bag (set)

OpenStudy (perl):

each pair of braces { } identifies a bag

OpenStudy (perl):

each pair of braces delineate a set
