Last spring,you brought a tree,and planted it in your front yard.When you planted it,the tree measured 3 feet in height.The tree is supposed to grow and additional 1.5 per year. Write an equation to represent the height,h after y years. Use your equation to find how tall the tree will be after 5 years. write and solve an equation to find out how many years it will take for the tree to be over 400 feet tall.

@e.mccormick

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@bloofoffiction

OpenStudy (anonymous):

h= 1.5y+3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

do you know why?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

because your trying to figure out the years for the 1.5 feet @bloofoffiction

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes so it would be the number of years times 1.5 plus the original 3 feet,

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thats it. and to figure out how tall the tree would be in 5 years i would put h=5y+3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@bloofoffiction

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Correct!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh thank you @bloofoffiction

OpenStudy (anonymous):

but how do i solve it

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok so you would multiply the number of years by 1.5, in this case 5

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what do you get?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

7.5

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes. Now add 3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

10.5

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh that was simple,haha stupid me

OpenStudy (anonymous):

now for the last part. you already know the answer but you need to solve for the decimal. \[400= 1.5y+3\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you need to isolate the variable.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

do you mean 40

OpenStudy (anonymous):

up top it says 400

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh srry i meant to put 40 @bloofoffiction

OpenStudy (anonymous):

but i get the idea of what to do

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok. so it would look like. \[40= 1.5y+3\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you need to make it so the only thing on the right side is the y variable.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Do you know how to do that?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so i would multiply 1.5 by 5 years add it by 3 and divide it by 40

OpenStudy (anonymous):

or i +3 to the 40 and the answer would be divided by 1.5

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No, the five isn't included in this equation. Your trying to find the number of years.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

or i +3 to the 40 and the answer would be divided by 1.5

OpenStudy (anonymous):

|dw:1413932351139:dw|

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you need to get rid of the 3, by eliminating it on both sides.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh ok and 37=1.5 is the answer

OpenStudy (anonymous):

not quite you need to isolate the y. It's not isolated yet, 1.5 is still attached.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

|dw:1413932526541:dw|

OpenStudy (anonymous):

divide both sides by 1.5 to isolate y

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh ok thank you

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what did you get as your answer?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

y=24.6

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@bloofoffiction

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes, but it depends on if you have to round. technically it should be 24.7

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thank you so much @bloofoffiction

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no problem! anything else?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no not for now

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Quick question, what math level is this?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

theres honors,intro to algebra,and advanced

OpenStudy (anonymous):

last year i was in advanced but now this year im in intro to algebra @bloofoffiction

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ok, just wondering, because I covered this not to long ago. I;m in algebra as well

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh cool.
