Nomenclature
I'm not exactly just asking for answers. Can you explain to me exactly how to get these I'm a little lost. I get the basics for di tri tetra etc. Provide a name or a chemical formula for the following compounds: a. barium hydroxide __________________________ b. hydrogen peroxide __________________________ c. Fe3(PO4)2 __________________________ d. HCl (aq) __________________________ e. dinitrogen trioxide __________________________ f. calcium nitride _________________________ g. Cu2SO4 _________________________ h. sodium carbonate _________________________ i. AlCl3 _________________________ j. P4O6 __________________________
Start by identifying the atom or ion itself first. For example, you need to memorize the polyatomic ions, such as phosphorous, nitric acid, nitrous acid, perchlorate, carbonate, bicarbonate, etc., For example, the first one is barium (Ba\(^{2+}\)), hydroxide (OH\(^-\)). hydroxide is an anion that you need to memorize, it is OH with a -1 charge. barium carries a 2+ charge. So, your answer for a. is \(\sf \color{red}{Ba(OH)_2}\). You add a parenthesis here because there are TWO hydroxide molecules per 1 barium atom. Why? Because you need to have a neutral molecule. A 2+ charge needs -2 charge to balance it. And since one hydroxide ion = -1 charge, -1 + -1 = -2 and -2 + 2 = 0 So, as you can see, your molecule is now neutral. Now, for question I, it is a bit different, you need to now NAME the inorganic species here. Start by noting that Al (aluminum) and Chlorine are paired here. You can name this aluminum chloride OR aluminum (III) chloride. The (III) represents the charge on the aluminum atom.
