Radical equation... please help??

OpenStudy (anonymous):

How to solve this...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

square both sides to eliminate the radical. when you solve for 'y', double check your solutions by plugging them into the original equation (to see if any solutions are extraneous)

I've just missed my class this morning :( I don't understand extraneous.. Can you show me a visual? Thank you for your help though

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well, sometimes when you solve for variables under a radical, you have to square (to eliminate the radical) -- this could lead to solutions that don't make sense if the radical was still there. in this particular case, though, there are no extraneous solutions. i'll give an example of extraneous solution later

Should I solve for 5y + 4 = 8y - 23...is that correct?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

correct

OpenStudy (anonymous):

y = 9

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ahh I can't believe I didn't know this.. (No sleep) LOL thank you for the help again :)

http://hotmath.com/hotmath_help/topics/extraneous-solutions.html has some examples of extraneous solutions (for your reference later) have a nice day!
